Marie Jaëll (1846-1925)
We are less than a week away from our third concert set of the season: Rediscovering Marie Jaëll, featuring cellist Diane Chaplin!
French composer Marie Jaëll wrote her Cello Concerto in 1882, making it the earliest known cello concerto by a woman composer. The manuscript, discovered in a library in Strasbourg, was reconstructed and arranged for soloist and orchestra. However, the original score presented some mysteries—Jaëll’s true intentions were unclear.
Through extensive research, Diane Chaplin revived the “forgotten” funeral march movement, uniting all four movements into a cohesive and stunning concerto. Her version received its world premiere last year in Portland, and we are thrilled to bring this rediscovered gem to our audience.
Join us for a pre-concert talk before each performance to learn more about the history and journey of this remarkable work.
We can’t wait to see you there!
